We took our two dogs to Canada and used this to navigate the northeast. Highly highly recommended.

I purchased this volume, unread, as a gift. Therefore, I cannot offer first-hand testimony (hence, my four stars). The recipient, however, vouches for its accuracy and usefulness.

Dog-Friendly New England is a well-organized travel guide for those of us who can’t think of travelling without our dog. The book is organized by region,
and each region is rated for its “dog-friendliness.”
This book is fun to read when you’re just trying to plan a New England trip.
It offers just the right amount of information, with capsule reviews of lodging establishments, restaurants, and attractions. You can probably plan your whole trip to New England based on the recommendations in this book.

The Dog Lover’s Companion is a great book to enjoy leafing through in the winter when you’re starting to think about places to go when the weather warms up. The information about natural attractions, for example is very accurate; I don’t blame the authors for not always having dog lodging policies up to date; I know places change ownership frequently. This is a great first starting point, but you have to go on the internet to make sure the places you’re interested in going to are still “pet friendly.”
Overall, though, I’ve found several great places to stay in the book, as well as some nice hikes I would have been unaware of, and I can’t give this book less than five stars.

My wife and I wanted to travel with our Newfoundland dog. No small feat! I read the reviews of this book and decided to try it for myself. I have just returned from 8 days in Kennebunk, Kittery, Bar Harbr ME and Newport RI. The suggested places to stay were teriffic. Clean, roomy enough and very very hospitable. The places to eat and go were also uniformly great! While these were not 5 star resorts, the owners get 5 stars for opening their places to a gateful family! GET THIS BOOK!

The book has some good leads but over all it seems like they missed out on a lot of places. Seems like the people who wrote it had the people who were in it pay to be included.

I’ve purchased a few pet travel books, but this one is by far the best one I’ve seen. My husband, dog and I just came back from a vacation in Portland, ME and this book was indispensable. Not only did it list some great pet shops to visit, but also provided us with a wonderful place to leave the puppy at Doggie Day Camp while we went shopping for the day. The other pet travel guides I have usually just list lodging accomodations, but this book lists not only canine-friendly places to stay, but also recreational areas, restaurants, boarding and grooming services and even vets in the area in case of a puppy emergency! All entries have addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and websites if available. In addition, the front section of the book has some great travel tips. Each region of each state is given a “biscuit rating” as to its level of canine-friendliness and each has a handy map. If you love to travel in New England and don’t want to leave Fido at home, then you need this book.

I expected more places that you can let dogs off-leash. There are many “dog parks” in CT that were not even mentioned in this book. All in all it, it gave me a couple of places to go. I am more interested in places that dogs can socialized and run.
