The late Sr. Kenpo Grandmaster Ed Parker Sr. known as the Father of American Kenpo Karate and founder of the International Karate Championships in Long Beach, California. He introduced Bruce Lee to the Martial Arts world. Close friend and bodyguard to Elvis Presley. Author, actor, movie stunt coordinator, businessman, publisher, graduate of Kamehameha High School and Brigham Young University. Served in the United States Coast Guard. Founder of the International Kenpo Karate Association with affiliates worldwide. Native born Hawaiian and honored in the Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame. Loving husband, father and grandfather.

With the accumulation of over thirty years of practical Martial Arts experience the Sr. Grandmaster of American Kenpo Karate Ed Parker Sr. decided to document and share his findings in a monumental series of books. Writing with the intent to expound upon the merits of his American KENPO Martial Arts system, he wrote of it’s many facets as, “a discipline, a way of life, a philosophy, and an art and a science.” With each book intended to offer a unique and exciting adventure into KENPO knowledge, he called the series of five volumes ” Infinite Insights Into Kenpo.” Early in 1982, Mr. Parker completed and published the first book in the “Infinite Insights Into Kenpo” series, titled “Mental Stimulation”. He wrote, “I was sensitive to the need of innovations during my early years of training. Analyzing the methods of fighting in Hawaii, the place of my birth and early rearing, verified the unquestionable need for an updated approach to the Martial Arts.” Mr. Parker broke the bonds of tradition and experimented with more logical and practical means of combating modern day methods of fighting. What emerged was, in his own words, “my own interpretation of the Art.” It was this perspective that he introduced in this initial volume and developed and expanded upon through his subsequent works. Mr. Parker introduced an unparalleled number of combative predicaments, indicating the need for several viewpoints. Thee mystic “Universal Pattern”, introduced to the public for the first time some twenty years earlier, was put into context. In an effort to develop and articulate definable qualities in the Martial Arts, he sought to set the backdrop for the unknown to become known, the intangible to become tangible and for the mysticism to disappear.

Sr. Grandmaster of American Kenpo Karate gives readers an opportunity to study, ponder and digest the two marvelous, insightful investigations into Kenpo, Mr. Parker’s third volume was published two years later in July 1985. With the same direction and thrust as Volume II, he continued in “Physical Analyzation Part II” to categorize, classify and expound on the basic subdivisions of blocks, strikes and specialized moves and methods. Blocks, primarily defensive moves, are defined typed of blocks are exhaustively expanded upon, such as-striking, parrying, positioned, pinning and specialized blocks taught in Kenpo. In an excellent photographic series overlaid with directional diagrams, to show the moves step by step. Specialized blocks, such as, catching, trapping, jamming, lockout, ricocheting and sliding checks are put into perspective photographically through simple, selected self-defense sequences. A myriad of masterful methods of executing a multitude of strikes is set forth completely for the first time in this volume. Strikes are sequentially, logically and practically, charted out, demonstrated and arguably addressed better than any other Martial Arts text. Using comparative analysis expanding on the bounds of existing experience, Mr. Parker elaborates masterfully on the merits of major and minor moves. Mr. Parker reminds his students that a knowledge of how and what is not complete without an understanding of why. He teaches the tools of the Kenpo artist, along with an understanding of appropriate principles and applications. Leaving a formula for future combat success on the street, he stresses a need for the consistent use of correct principle.

Grouse Hunter’s Guide: 2nd Edition

Walrod, veteran author and hunter, believes grouse hunting is unique in its difficulty and in forcing the hunter to be alert to the surroundings. In fact, one “hunts grouse by hunting habitat.” The explosive flush, the tangled habitat, the bird’s great speed and elusive flight, make the hunter count success by number of flushes rather than by kills. Walrod writes for both the novice and experienced, describing grouse bahavior, habitat, hunting methods, and recipes. He emphasizes that proper technique is hard physical work, but the joy of grouse hunting is related to the difficulty and is a major element in the sporting ethic. With a photographer’s vision and a good writing style, Walrod appeals to naturalists and armchair hunters as well as hunters. Recommended for public libraries in upland game country. Revised edition cites up-to-date statistics reflecting the trends among grouse hunters Includes a chapter of grouse recipes

Dennis Walrod takes beginning and experienced grouse hunters alike through an examination of key aspects of the hunt: how to get the most out of a covert, choosing guns and dogs, as well as concerns particular to autumn stalking or winter hunting. The emphasis falls on grouse hunting as a sport pursued for the thrill of the hunt, the adrenaline shot brought by the force of a flush, rather than the quest for impressive numbers.

A Course Called Ireland: A Long Walk in Search of a Country, a Pint, and the Next Tee

In this cheerily self-deprecating work, Coynean Irish-American Philadelphian who never knew much about his roots and avoided exercisedescribes how he undertook a wildly ambitious plan to spend four months playing over 40 golf courses in Ireland and getting to them by walking. Coyne’s tiredness quickly translates into hiker’s euphoria; however, he has a tougher time facing the Irish breakfast every B&B owner serves him (sausages, rashers, beans, soda breadan afternoon of wincing regret). Having already written a couple of books on golf (e.g., Paper Tiger), Coyne knows his way around a course, but more importantly, he also knows better than to bore readers with monotonous accounts of hole after hole. His style is more that of the travelogue, as he’s bowled over by one astoundingly beautiful and windswept course after the next. By the time Coyne gets to Ulster, it’s clear that golf is by far the least interesting thing for him, as the author packs his humorous narrative with historical tales and travel anecdotes about the small towns he passes through and the many pubs he stops in along the way. The hysterical story bestseller about one man’s epic Celtic sojourn in search of ancestors, nostalgia, and the world’s greatest round of golf

By turns hilarious and poetic, A Course Called Ireland is a magnificent tour of a vibrant land and paean to the world’s greatest game in the tradition of Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods. In his thirties, married, and staring down impending fatherhood, Tom Coyne was familiar with the last refuge of the adult male: the golfing trip. Intent on designing a golf trip to end all others, Coyne looked to Ireland, the place where his father has taught him to love the game years before. As he studied a map of the island and plotted his itinerary, it dawn on Coyne that Ireland was ringed with golf holes. The country began to look like one giant round of golf, so Coyne packed up his clubs and set off to play all of it-on foot.

A Course Called Ireland is the story of a walking-averse golfer who treks his way around an entire country, spending sixteen weeks playing every seaside hole in Ireland. Along the way, he searches out his family’s roots, discovers that a once-poor country has been transformed by an economic boom, and finds that the only thing tougher to escape than Irish sand traps are Irish pubs.

The beautiful images of the photographers of Hill Photographers have helped catapult this coffeetable book into one of the most prized possessions for both Aspen locals and visitors. The photography plainly shows that nature has been the primary backdrop for the ascendance of Aspen into the limelight.

Here is a view of Aspen through a collection of photographs depicting one of America’s most popular resorts and its setting in a dramatic natural landscape. At nearly 8,000 feet, Aspen is nestled in a high alpine valley in the heart of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, surrounded by designated Wilderness and National Forest. Despite a growing urban influence, Aspen defines a transition zone with nature where an intimate history of the rugged West remains a predominant feature in its character. While Aspen is known primarily as a ski resort, it is also a cultural and artistic community abounding in diverse forms of expression. Its history goes back more than 100 years to a rough-and-tumble silver mining past that produced the largest single nugget of high grade silver ever extracted from a mine. Aspen’s legacy is as rich as the mountains from which the silver ore was mined with dynamite, mule, pick and shovel. A strong preservation effort has saved many of the old buildings built in the Victorian fashion of the 1880s and the town is resplendent with a charm all its own. But nature continues to hold sway with a vast expanse of public lands abounding with recreational opportunities. Horseback riding, skiing, mountain biking, kayaking, mountain climbing–the list goes on. It is no wonder Aspen is an international destination, summer and winter. Aspen in Color compiles photographs from Hill Photography, images of nature in one of the most magnificent regions in the Colorado Rockies. The work of nine photographers, all associated with Hill Photography, this book characterizes the natural environment of Aspen and its human heritage. It shows nature in its many moods, and chronicles the activities of the city’s residents and visitors. But the human element is in the background. It is the intent of this book to describe nature in rich color. For nature is Aspen’s true heritage, the source of its historic mineral wealth, recreational quality, cultural fame and lasting beauty. Here is Aspen in Color.

Here is a view of Aspen and the surrounding Rocky Mountains through a collection of timeless color photographs by local photographers. This book combines the images of nature from the Aspen area with photographs of the town, characterizing nature in its many moods, and chronicling the activities of the city’s residents and visitors.

In the Spirit of Aspen

A stylish coffee-table book drawing on the words and photo albums of the glamorous people who live here, In the Spirit of Aspen reveals the spirit of our sophisticated town nestled in the Rocky Mountains. –Aspen Sojourner

Eclectic, eccentric, and smart, Aspen has always been a pioneer of style. Drawing on the words and photo albums of the glamorous people who leaved there, page after page of this richly textured volume reveals the spirit of this surprisingly sophisticated town nestled in the wild Rocky Moutains of Colorado. An established favorite getaway for movers and shakers, such as George Soros, Anne Bass, and Rupert Murdoch, as well as the artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Jennifer Bartlett, and Eric Fischl, Aspen is also home to a steady stream of illustrious escapees from both coasts such as Kevin Costner, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Ted Kennedy and Bill Maher. But much more than a resort town, Aspen is an idea and an ideal, a creative hotbed of intellect and style. In the spirt of Aspen brilliantly captures the dazzling mix of culture and natural beauty.

In the Spirit of Aspen (Colorado)

In a plodding portrayal that is reverent to a fault, Grant, a writer for ESPN, chronicles the challenges and triumphs of Tyrone Willingham’s first year at the helm of the nation’s most storied college football team: the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Grant highlights the significance and pressure on Willingham as the school’s first black coach in any sport, and he does provide the requisite behind-the-scenes glimpses of the program that are sure to pique the interest of any Irish fan. Indeed, one of the most engrossing incidents features Willingham derisively breaking down tape of his former team, Stanford, and clearly laying the blame at the feet of its new coach. But the writing itself is formulaic and dull. Aside from painful extended metaphors like describing Willingham and the team as a jazz combo, Grant occasionally strays from his otherwise distant, professional tone with awkward dips into slang that he seems to think sports talk demands. He refers to Touchdown Jesus, a mosaic on the university library, as having a “certain bling-bling”; he describes an opposing receiver as getting “truly Heisman on their asses”; and at one point he bizarrely refers to Willingham as “the most popular Negro in America.” In addition, Grant is so adoring of Willingham that the coach hardly comes across as human. Grant played football for him at Stanford, and a first-person player’s perspective would have been revealing. The book has enough details and anecdotes to keep a rabid Notre Dame fan turning pages, but it will hardly be of interest to a wider audience or leave much of a mark in the realm of sports literature.

The football team at Notre Dame, once among the best in the country, has had a rough couple of decades. After slipping lower and lower in the standings, the team was badly in need of a boost. Enter Tyrone Willingham, the school’s first black football coach. Against heavy odds and the preconceptions of a lot of people, Willingham led the team to 10 victories in 2002 and an appearance in a major bowl game. If the Fighting Irish haven’t quite been restored to their Rockne-era glory, they have certainly made remarkable strides in just one season. Written by a sportswriter and former footballer who played under Willingham in the late 1980s, this account follows the Irish through the 2002 season. The game-by-game reports are standard sports fare, but the portrait of Willingham is more memorable. Grant captures the excitement of college football through the lens of a man whose love of the game, whose sheer exuberance in the face of often-daunting odds, brought an entire team, if not an entire school, back to life. When Notre Dame chose Ty Willingham as their new football coach at the end of the lackluster 2001 season, few believed he could turn around the underperforming team.Willingham did that and much more, restoring Notre Dame to the national spotlight and giving the Irish’s millions of fans a sense of pride and mission for the first time in years. Along with doubling the team’s number of wins, Willingham vigorously rebuffed the conventional wisdom that the dearth of black coaches in college and professional sports was due to a lack of available talent. The first black coach ever hired by Notre Dame in any sport, he became the biggest sports story of 2002 and gave emphatic notice that he is a major force to be reckoned with in the years ahead. In RETURN TO GLORY, Alan Grant, a young sportswriter who played football under Willingham at Stanford, takes readers inside Notre Dame’s program as no one has seen it before. He masterfully recreates, week by week, the drama of a team playing above all expectations and the maneuverings of a master strategist facing the biggest challenge of his life.Notre Dame fans and general readers caught up by Notre Dame’s storybook season will make RETURN TO GLORY the best-read football book of the year.

The New Gold Standard: Charlie Weis and Notre Dame’s Rise to Glory

From the most storied school in college football history . . .

The Gold Standard — abandoned by most of the world in the 1930s — has been an article of faith in South Bend, Indiana, for almost a century. Mere winning records and second-tier bowl games? Not good enough for Fighting Irish fans. No college football program has produced more national championships, more consensus All-Americans, and more Heisman Trophy winners than Notre Dame. But recently, not so much: no national championship since 1988 and a combined 1113 record in the 2003-2004 seasons. So out went Tyrone Willingham, fired just three years into his tenure, the first Irish coach ever to be dismissed before the end of his original deal. In came Charlie Weis, a forty-eight-year-old Notre Dame grad with four Super Bowl rings as an assistant coach. Weis proved, in the space of a single season, to be a football maestro with a hard edge, a brilliant mind, an affinity for detail, and an uncanny sense of how to motivate people. He returned a program mired in the blahs to its rightful (and historic) place among college footballs elite. This book takes you inside a season unlike any other in Fighting Irish history — and inside Weiss master plan for restoring the Gold Standard in South Bend.

“A richly documented portrait and a model of historical detective work.” (Dane Kennedy, University of Nebraska) –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This unusual study combines two books in one: the 1794 autobiographical travel narrative of an Indian, Dean Mahomet, recalling his years as camp-follower, servant, and subaltern officer in the East India Company’s army (1769 to 1784); and Michael H. Fisher’s portrayal of Mahomet’s sojourn as an insider/outsider in India, Ireland, and England. Emigrating to Britain and living there for over half a century, Mahomet started what was probably the first Indian restaurant in England and then enjoyed a distinguished career as a practitioner of “oriental” medicine, i.e., therapeutic massage and herbal steam bath, in London and the seaside resort of Brighton. This is a fascinating account of life in late eighteenth-century India–the first book written in English by an Indian–framed by a mini-biography of a remarkably versatile entrepreneur.
Travels presents an Indian’s view of the British conquest of India and conveys the vital role taken by Indians in the colonial process, especially as they negotiated relations with Britons both in the colonial periphery and the imperial metropole.
Connoisseurs of unusual travel narratives, historians of England, Ireland, and British India, as well as literary scholars of autobiography and colonial discourse will find much in this book. But it also offers an engaging biography of a resourceful, multidimensional individual.

Much has happened to our understanding of Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam’s Communist Party, and the war in the thirty-six years that elapsed between the first publication and this new edition. This is an interesting read to catch the flavor of the 1960s. (Historian )

A fine and vividly-drawn sketch of Ho Chi Minh’s life-long struggle for Vietnamese independence through political mobilization, diplomacy, and warfare. Anyone who wonders why the French and the American armed forces with their overwhelming military superiority could not defeat the Vietnamese resistance should read this book. (Frances FitzGerald )

One of the most influential leaders of the 20th century, Ho Chi Minh was founder of the Indochina Communist Party and its successor, the Viet-Minh, and was president from 1945 to 1969 of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam .

In exploring the life and career of Ho Chi Minh, Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Halberstam provides a window into traditions and culture that influenced the American war in Vietnam, while highlighting the importance of nationalism in determining the war’s outcome. As depicted by Halberstam, Ho is first and foremost a nationalist and a patriot. He was also, according to the author, a pragmatist “who was able to turn the abstract into the practical and to embody the concept of revolution to his own people.” This edition includes a new preface by the author.

Chris Jericho made his wrestling debut at the age of 19. In 2001 he became the first undisputed champion of the WWE and is the only performer to have held six different titles in WWE’s history. He has starred in films, is the lead singer of the rock band Fozzy and has appeared in numerous comedy series. He came out of retirement late in 2007. Peter Thomas Fornatale is a freelance writer and editor who lives in Brooklyn, New York with his wife Susan and black labrador, Mugs.

Picking up right where his New York Times bestseller A Lion’s Tale left off, with his legendary 1999 entrance into the WWE, Jericho takes us from Chicago to Tokyo, New Delhi to Kuala Lumpur, Winnipeg to Madison Square Garden, as he details his classic rivalries with the Rock, Steve Austin, HHH, Shawn Michaels, and John Cena, along with all the politics and backstage machinations he faced outside the ring. He also describes his unique relationship with Vince McMahon and the long road they travelled to find respect for each other. But it was only after Jericho became the first Undisputed World Champion in the history of the wrestling business that he became disenchanted with the WWE and decided to walk away, turning his back on fifteen years in the ring to further his other lifelong dream: that of being a rock star. His band, Fozzy, proceeded to tour the world playing everywhere from the smallest sports bars in Pennsylvania to Monsters of Rock at Castle Donnington festival in England, all the while experiencing the same kinds of glorifying highs and embarrassing lows he faced while building his wrestling career. As if that weren’t enough, Chris recounts his hilarious escapades of breaking in with the Hollywood elite via doomed auditions, short-lived reality shows, made-for-television movies, and red-carpet interviewing fiascos. Along the way he was forced to deal with the heart-wrenching deaths of his mother and his long-time confidant Eddy Guerrero, as well as the horrific murder/suicide of his best friend Chris Benoit and his family. Jam packed with Chris Jericho’s trademark self-effacing humor, one-of-a-kind writing style, and ridiculous random encounters with everyone from Arnold Schwarzenegger, Axl Rose, and Paul McCartney, UNDISPUTED is one of the most highly anticipated follow-ups of its kind and one of a rare breed – a sequel that might be better than the original.

A Lion’s Tale: Around the World in Spandex

This funny, insightful and compulsively readable autobiography by professional wrestling superstar Lion Heart Jericho matches fellow wrestler Mick Foley’s bestselling Have a Nice Day! Jericho reached international stardom after joining the media juggernaut World Wrestling Entertainment (formerly WWF) in 1999, but this book neglects his many accomplishments since then, such as his legendary same-night defeat of wrestling powerhouses the Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin to become the WWE’s first undisputed heavyweight champion. Instead, Jericho recounts the fascinating story of his early yearsin effect, a short history of world wrestling trends since 1960from his brutal early training in his native Canada through finally being invited to join the WWE. Jericho ignores or glosses over controversial topics like steroid use, preferring to keep things light and cheery. His hilarious and detailed descriptions of his many bouts, especially his 1995 calling card match in Japan before 10,000 fans, will leave readers hoping for a sequel. (Oct. 25)

The Wee Mad Road: A midlife escape to the Scottish Highlands

The Wee Mad Road is a funny, touching, insightful look at the ebb and flow of an isolated Highland fishing and crofting community, a place molded by forces of nature and tempered by its people. It is a road well worth traveling, if only from the comfort of your favorite armchair. –Neill Kennedy Ray, Scottish Life magazine, Summer 2008

If you’re looking for a respite from politics and war, you can lose yourself in The Wee Mad Road…so idyllic it’ll make you Highland green with envy. –Mary Ann Grossman, Saint Paul Sunday Pioneer Press, May 4, 2008

”The Wee Mad Road is kind of like Peter Mayle’s A Year in Provence, with rotten weather and lots of whisky.” – Bob Gilbert, Villager, May 7, 2008

”…a gloriously whimsical account of the Highland lifestyle, beautifully captured in words and illustrations — the characters, the pub life, the ceilidhs. This is great fun.” – Hamish Coghill, Scottish Life magazine, Autumn 2008

”…a two-year adventure of shearing sheep, learning folk songs and befriending locals. The whole romantic endeavor is captured in The Wee Mad Road.” –Kerri Westenberg, Minneapolis Sunday Star Tribune, June 22, 2008

Lovesick sheep, rumors of war, storms at sea, whisky galore – a midlife escape from an ‘empty nest’ in America to start afresh in the wilds of Scotland.

When their children grow up and leave home, authors Jack and Barbara Maloney sell their house in a midwest suburb and run off to the Highlands. Following a one-lane track called ”The Wee Mad Road,” they discover an isolated remnant of traditional Gaelic culture, peopled by characters as unique and memorable as the surrounding mountains.

The Maloneys settle into an old stone cottage and spend two years in repeated collisions with quaint Highland ways. Entries from Barbara’s diary detail the realities of village life, while Jack recounts tales of poachers, crofters and lairds in one of mainland Britain’s most scenic and isolated corners.

The Wee Mad Road is a warm and witty account of two years in the Highlands, with illustrations of everyday life in the wildest reaches of the United Kingdom. It’s a ‘how to’ book for anyone who dreams of escaping the doldrums of suburban midlife and starting over.
