I recently hurt my back and was laid up for quite awhile. My brother, knowing that I was hurt, brought me over some reading material. This material was Mark St.Amant's book "Committed".

Let me start by saying that I do not play Fantasy Football. I do watch some NFL games, but I am by no means a hard-core football fan. I am however, a hard-core reader. I confess that I did not think I would like this book before I started reading it. After the first few pages, however, I was hooked.

Here was a very readable story, a story that was laid out in such a way that I wanted to follow it to its end. As I read through the story I was introduced to a number of characters that I am still interested in. I also feel as though I got to know the author a little bit. Here is a guy that was crazy enough to quit his job to pursue Fantasy Football yet sane enough to remain "committed" to the most important things in his life.

I think he was able to achieve his stated goal of introducing me, the reader, to the world of fantasy football in such a way that I am interested in perhaps joining a league next year.

He also told me something about his wife and his friends, all of whom sound very real and very "normal". In short, he shared something of his life with me, a perfect stranger.

I must give a warning though, there were times while reading this book that I laughed so hard I had to stop reading. It hurt my back for me to laugh that hard. Even though I knew I was in for some physical pain, I still read the book cover to cover.

"Just Kick It" is an excellent follow-up to Mark St. Amant's first book "Committed". I found myself laughing out loud on the train ride home from work. But it is more than just a funny story of an ex-soccer player becoming a place kicker for a semi-pro football team. Mark St. Amant does a wonderful job bringing the reader close to his teammates, each taking a different path to semi-pro football. In describing their stories, I felt closer to the team. "Just Kick It" is about much more than just a football season. And the members of the Boston Panthers are much more than just football players. It is about decisions, priorities, and looking at life from the perspective of others. Keep writing mark, you have a unique talent.

I liked this book but at times it dwelled to much on the authors own FF team from 2004. The stories about the FFL's he visited was interesting and there was some good technical information here and there, all with a humorous twist.

You know how it is when someone insists on telling you about their Fantasy Football team? What if it was their Fantasy Team from three years ago? That's where this book gets a bit cumbersome for me but if you are interested in what it's like to be insane about Fantasy Football this is a good read.

Absolutely hysterical. I caught myself missing my subway stops because I was so involved in the book. I've never joined a fantasy football league before but have tons of buddies who play...and after reading this I can't wait to join my first league this year. The book offered some helpful pointers & strategies for rookies like me, but overall was a comical, informative look at the roller coaster ride people go through in a typical fantasy football season.

Anyone who enjoyed the movies Rudy, Invicible, The Rookie & Hoosiers will want to read this book by Mark St. Amant. Once again the ordinary guy succeeds when he fufills his dream with hard work & determination. That's how a 37 year old author was able to become a place kicker for a minor league football team, even though he never played a game of organized football on any level. Mark accepted an unexpected invitation to place kick for the Boston Panthers of the EFL. You'll enjoy his journey from a struggling doubting Thomas to a league all-star his second season. His insight to human nature & racial tensions is worth the read as well.

Mark St. Amant has put together an enjoyable book that takes us through his year as a full-time fantasy football junkie. But this book is also more than that. Mr. St. Amant is a skilled writer who provides great descriptions of how he quit his job and convinced his bride to go along with his plan. He weaves in the interesting history of fantasy sports and introduces us to a cast of characters from across America who share this hobby with millions of other Americans.

It's a fun book and an excellent first effort by a pretty talented writer. Definately worth a read and the perfect "vacaction" book.

Information for the 'newbie', 'vet', and the 'FF Widow(er)'. Mr. St. Amant is witty, informative, inciteful, and sacrilegious throughout. An excellent read. If you are looking for a page turner, this is the one!

I'm not exaggerating when I say that "Committed" is easily one of the funniest books I've read in the last 15 years, and this coming from a big fan of Sedaris, Nick Hornby, Augusten Burroughs, Hunter Thompson, all the humor/sports/narrative non-fiction bigwigs.

I saw the author (St. Amant) in a funny segment on ESPN's "Cold Pizza" and picked up the book that afternoon...and finished it by the following evening. Literally couldn't put it down, and this is no thin paperback (it's 300 pages, plus some funny appendices). The tone is personal, self-deprecating and humorous; the information about the rise and explosion of fantasy football, and why so many millions of people are obsessed with it, is enlightening and interesting; the tips and strategies for "newbies" of the hobby are helpful; and the best part, the story - St. Amant quit a great job to play fantasy football full-time because he'd never won his local fantasy footbal league before and had grown tired of being "always a bridesmaid" (which, sadly, all of us can relate to in one way or another) - is original and outrageous; finally, his sarcastically funny wife, who lets him quit in the first place, is a saint.

His no-holds-barred, participatory immersion into this exploding national subculture made me think of him as a sort of "crazy grandson of George Plimpton," with hints of Exley's "A Fan's Notes," what with the sports obsession themes. While it's not exactly a "how-to-win-your-league" textbook, I'm glad it wasn't; there are plenty of those dry, one-season-only manuals out there already. Instead, "Committed" is the first book of its kind on fantasy football (or fantasy sports, for that matter), a timeless, must-read for fantasy football fans, for sure, but also for sports fans in general, for the wives and girlfriends of these sports/fantasy nuts, or anyone who just likes to kick back on a plane, a beach or under a blanket with a quick, smart, original, hilarious tale that reels you in from the start. GET. THIS. BOOK. TODAY. I'm eagerly anticipating St. Amant's next book, be it fantasy sports or otherwise...

Edit to add that I picked up the paperback and it has a hilarious new epilogue, priceless stuff! even though I read the hardcover only a year ago, I re-read it in the softcover version, cover-to-cover, all in about two days. Fantastic, hilarious, true, accurate, original, and entertaining, even the second time around. I look forward to the next book, Mr. St. Amant!

In May for my birthday I received several fantasy football books as gifts. This was one of them. Most dealt with playing fantasy football and how to do it better and all of them were great, but "Committed" was different. It is more a humorous story of the fantasy football year, not necessarily a "How to" book.
It was hilarious. I laughed out loud so many times my wife asked what was so funny. Then she wanted to read it and although she did not enjoy it as much as I did; I think she appreciated this "fantasy football thing" more after reading it.
This truly is a great and memorable review for anyone that has played FF<
