This book is a MUST for those of you who are (a) a mother, (b) a wife, (c) a sister, or (d) a girlfriend of a football player or fan. If you have ever been confused about some rule or infraction of the game, read this book. As a cheerleader and sister and daughter, i have found that reading this book has not only helped in my comprehension of football, but I impress many of my hard-core guy football friends with my endless knowledge of the game. I’m a hit at every Superbowl party. Though football can be very confusing for the average female spectator, reading this comprehensive book will definately help.

I recently started dating a guy who LOVES football. I felt so left out-I understand and can talk baseball and basketball, but football has always been the one sport I could never understand. I wanted to find something to help me understand my new loves other love and Holly’s book has been wonderful! It’s funny, a light read and she makes football actually make sense! I can watch the game with my guy and even though I’m still learning, I’m understanding it more and more and can’t wait to read more so I can share with him all that I know about the game now. (Plus, it doesn’t hurt that he finds it incredibly hot that I can talk football!;)
If you’re wanting a good resource to learn about the sport, or just need a refresher, this book is a great fun read to help you along the way.

Helma Clark successfully conquers and delivers the elements of football, describing her view of the subject through the lens of a fanatical sports mom and an inveterate high-end shopper. Even if you know nothing about football, you will laugh out loud at her unique take on this previously all-male domain. A great pre-Super Bowl stocking stuffer.

This book is exactly what it purports to be: a very basic introduction to the game of football, written for women. Before I read it, I knew where the goal posts were and where the 50 yard line was. The book started with these basic concepts, but by page 3 I was learning new information in a simple straight-forward way. It defines several key terms and has an illustrated guide to referee calls. It is also geared for women and, while it could be useful for a male who knows nothing about football, the book is very female-oriented. (comparing the purpose of the game of football to a 90% off sale on cashmere sweaters at Macy’s, for example).

This book would be mind-numbingly oversimplified for anyone who already knows anything about football. However, for a mom who has no background in football and wants to take an active part in her son’s life, it will enable you to ask intelligent questions and make at least a few intelligent observations.

Bonus: it will fit in a large-sized purse, so you can take it to games.

Ladies! Football widows! It’s football season again. And you still don’t know a thing about it! Well, that can change. Snot Bubbles is the definitive answer. Written by a former non-fan whose kid got into the game, Snot Bubbles will teach you what “yardage” is, why who does what when, and what it all means. Catch up with the “know-it-alls” of the game and sound intelligent. Maybe it will earn you some beer and popcorn!

At the very least, you will laugh yourself silly at all the antics you finally understand. Then you can go shopping.

Some gave her poor reviews but I think it’s designed for those that want to learn(not know EVERYTHING) about football. Just to enjoy the game. I don’t think she designed this for people who already know about football. I enjoyed reading and learned alot.

Veronica White, the author of “Deadline Murder”, a thriller surrounding the Detroit Lions, a female sportswriter, and the Lions first Super Bowl win in 25 years.

Like Holly, I fell in love with football through early childhood conversations with my father, an all-around athlete, who was the first black to play for his high school football team and was recruited by the Negro Baseball League.

Although I have been following football for years, Holly’s book has provided me with wonderful knowledge of the inner workings of the sport, both on and off the field.

I’m a die-hard NBA fan, and could always tolerate hockey and baseball, but my whole life I was adminant that I hated football, and always would.
To me it seemed boring, confusing, slow-moving, and dumbed-down compared to other sports. Every play looked the same – the ball was snapped, a bunch of guys ran into eachother and the play stopped. I once laughed out-loud in disbelief when my husband told me that football perhaps had the most strategy of any sport.
I come from a football-loving family, and married a football lover, and when I heard about this book I figured it couldn’t hurt to remotely understand what was going on during the many football games I’m forced to endure.
This book is EXACTLY what I needed. It’s not a total chick’s guide but it’s not purely educational either (there’s a list of the top 10 football butts!). Holly Robinson Peete is obviously a real football fan (and was long before she married Rodney Peete) and she knows what she’s talking about. She presents all aspects of the game clearly, intelligently, and with humor.
I finished the book this afternoon, and (with shock) it occured to me that I was looking forward to this Sunday so I could watch a game and apply some of all that I learned. I have totally come to appreciate the game due to Holly’s smart and clever analogies and examples (and insider info).

I never understood what was going on at football games until I read this book!! It uses funny analogies to explain plays and the pictures are very helpful. For anyone who wants to understand football jargon, this is the book for you!!! I actually watched the superbowl this year and understood what was going on!!!!

This is a great little book if you know nothing at all about football. I appreciated the descriptions of each of the positions and cute drawings of ref’s to explain all the different calls. I guess I know more about the game than I thought, because I think I’m ready for a more in-depth book. Luckily, the author has a list of suggested further reading.

I purchased this book as a present for my brother who has started to become interested in football. He wanted a book that would explain all the rules and technicalities of the game. Overall, he liked the book and learned from it.

My brother and I grew up collecting the minature helmets from all the NFL teams and I always watched games with my dad and brother (Go Redskins!) but I’ve never known much about the game. Now when I watch with my husband I ask a lot of questions, like why does the clock continue to run down even when nothing is happening?! Holly’s book has answered so many questions and truly explained the game and its origins. I love all the little tidbits, like knowing about the great Super Bowl moments and legendary players. This book is easy to read and I’m giving it to all my girlfirends who refer to themselves as “football widows” since their guys disappear (mentally and physically) when the game is on.

I am still in the process of reading this one, but the fact that I haven’t stopped reading it yet is a testament to its worth. I am not a football fan, but my boyfriend is, so I got this book so that I can actually understand some of the stuff he’s saying every Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Holly breaks it down and makes it interesting. So I would recommend this book to other women out there like me who aren’t fans but at least want to be able to connect a little with those in their lives who are.

The most dreaded time of the year for a lot of women is football season. During this time, the men in their lives disappear and attention is solely focused on “THE GAME.” However, for some women, this is an exciting time because they too love all things football. One such woman is Holly Robinson Peete, actress and football player’s wife. A die-hard football fan from childhood, Peete has taken a complex game and broken it into an understandable guide that will not only benefit women wanting to get closer to their men, but also for anyone wanting to know more about football…and she’s given it a “girlfriend” slant.

The author pulls play lines from her famous husband, NFL quarterback Rodney Peete, includes cheat sheets, historical data, and great moments in the sport. She also includes some of her own experiences with the game, those involved in it, and a special point of view session from other football wives which I found down to earth and informative. Peete concludes with a glossary of football terms to round out this great reference book.

Peete has created a wonderful book that takes the “ho-hum” out of football for those of us who aren’t necessarily fans. The writing is light and conversational and makes you want to know more about the game. At the same time, she educates hard-core fans; all in this neatly packaged book. From the catchy title to the overall concept of the book, many women will be drawn to GET YOUR OWN DAMN BEER, I’M WATCHING THE GAME in their efforts to become more football savvy.

This book is adequate for complete novices, its intended audience, IF you can overlook Holly’s exceedingly annoying potty mouth throughout the book. A little less print wasted on her luxurious media room and gameday fanaticism, and more devoted to insider info would have increased the book’s value. (She alludes to political maneuvering in the sport, but does not elucidate one whit.)

If you’re looking for more information that’s just as understandable to the novice, I recommend Howie Long’s “Football for Dummies.” Bonus: Long delivers exponentially more info in a completely professional way, without resorting to one profanity. He answers more of the beginner’s questions without boring a more experienced fan.

This is a great book for someone who knows nothing about football. My boyfriend and I were going to go to a TX Longhorns VS OK Sooners game, a huge game for college football fans, and I knew nothing of the sport! So I bought this book, and by the time we made it to the game, I knew enough to understand what was going on, I had so much fun!

This book was a fun read and I must say that I am that much more knowledgeable about the sport; yet still a good way to go! My husband has gotten a kick out of my new found interest and looks forward to Friday’s to start the weekend trash talking!

Holly has made understanding the game less complex while offering historical information, from the origin of the game to who has the cutest butt! All jokes aside, I think Holly is credible, mixes good humor with wit and breaks the game down as a woman would, paying attention to the details! Since reading the book I have been able to connect with other women; sharing my excitement. I feel a sense of empowerment as they begin to ask the questions that they may have been embarrassed to ask over the years.

There were a few areas that I had to really focus my attention, but overall, I’d score this one a TOUCHDOWN!!!

My somewhat sports inclined 9th grader decided to go out for football this year. I found myself in the stands not knowing anything other than the ball needs to go into the end zone. I searched and found this book. It’s great. My son no longer rolls his eyes because I don’t understand what he’s saying. I know all the positions and I’m learning the calls. Pretty good for just a couple of weeks. I’m still not sure I like it when my baby is at the bottom of that pile of sweaty boys, but the book told me “Moms NEVER go on the field.” Good read.

Good Book, not only gives technical info about plays, etc, but also gives some basic history, who’s who, etc. Very easy to read and understand. She outlines the very basic (sometimes too basic) elements of offensive and defensive lines, and then talks through various types of plays. I’m a big a fan of Holly’s, and thought the book was very helpful. My male friends do a double take when can I call the play before they can! Fun!

This book is giving me the basics that I needed to enjoy the game with my husband.

What a easily comprehensible football primer for moms, wives, and significant others! Snot Bubbles enables us women to share the game of football intelligently with the guys in our lives who love it. A must have for all women!!!!

When I first started dating my boyfriend, I hated football. It was even worse when I would try to talk to him and he would suddenly get interested in the television because someone made an amazing football play. I got this book because I was tired of being a football widow and I wanted to learn the basics of the game.

I was not disappointed! The writing style was funny, girly, and informed. The author not only talked about the rules of the sport, but also history such as important games from the past. When I finished the book, I knew quite a bit about football and was able to (finally) understand things like why first downs are important or what exactly a center does. Some things I even got to explain to my boyfriend, and of course, that made my day.

I’m now a huge fan and never miss my team play. It is something that I can enjoy with him in exchange for the chick flicks he watches for me. Plus, I truly enjoy the sport now. I never thought I would say something like this, but go Steelers!

I have watched football for years. I understand the basics but wanted to know more about intricacies of the game, such as play calling. This book does a pretty good job covering both the basics and the intricacies. It is a little sophomoric at times and definitely for women only. As in, “So and so has the nicest butt in a uniform.” “The quarterback is the player who starts the play; you’ll know the defense is on the field when the quarterback isn’t.” So Holly starts the lesson from the beginning–the VERY beginning.

I highly doubt there is an American male over the age of 10 who doesn’t know who the quarterback is, but I imagine there are some women out there who have never watched a football game or never heard about a football game. These women I speak of are clearly NOT from Texas. Because, man or woman, you have to be in a coma to live in Texas and not know everything there is to know about football.

I could have done without the chapter on NFL wives (yawn, who cares), but this is a book marketed to women so fluff is to be expected. Be it out of jealousy (at least I am being honest) or disinterest, I have no desire to read about the trials and tribulations of being a rich NFL wife. I saw that chapter title and skipped straight to next chapter.

A few more graphics would have been nice to aid in understanding what she was explaining, but good job overall in covering the ins-and-outs of what is happening on the field from start to finish. Now when the announcers mention a “slant” or “play action” I know what they are talking about or can look it up. Great reference book to have on the coffee table during football season. I wish I had this book years ago.

I bought this book because I wanted to (at minimum) figure out what is so great about football that it captivates my husband’s attention for 21 entire weekends of the year. (If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, right?!) Holly Robinson Peete does a great job explaining the game in a way that is interesting and relevant to the average non-sports-minded woman. Surprisingly, the NFL is replete with the kind of drama, strategy, cute men, and cattiness that you’d find on primetime TV. A couple of the chapters could have been ommitted (she devotes quite a lot of text to discussing what it’s like to be a quarterback’s wife). Overall, very informative and will help you understand what’s going on when you watch a game. Plus, she provides a lot of trivia that you can use to quiz your guy and ultimately feel smarter.

The first benefit I received after reading this book was that I was able to immediately identify the position my 5th grader is playing by recalling from memory the diagram of player positions in this book. After a few more reads, I can spot offsides, know who the ineligible receivers are and finally know what clipping means. I even know that offensive tackles don’t actually tackle anyone. I’m a little creeped out by all the references to “sexy” football players and “tight ends” (and I’m not talking about the position here), especially since my player is 10 years old, but the author seems to hop back and forth between talking about hot, sweaty, grunting NFL players and sweet, little, innocent youth league players who need praise and encouragment from their parents, so if you can flow with her meandering about, it’s not that big of a deal.

A good and useful book overall.

I love basketball and ice hockey. Those I understand well. I love NFL but I understand (understood) it less. This clarified all the parts I needed clarification on and now I’m understanding it fully. Holly made this a fun read, but she knows her stuff too. Now I don’t look so blank when I watch a game on ESPN on pay tv. She knows she’s aiming this at intelligent women who are NFL’y challenged, so this is really well written and I highly recommend this to anyone.

If you are as clueless about football as I was, this is the book for you. It covers the very basics so you at least get a basic understanding of the game. I always wondered why everyone got so excited about “downs”. I thought touchdowns were what you got excited about. I understand now. This book got me hooked on football. It’s just a primer. If you want more details after reading it, there are other books out there. Of course, just watching the games will help too.

I bought this book because my boyfriend really loves football and I was never motivated before to learn about it. However, I saw this book on Oprah and hoped it would help me. Its really easy to follow, and its definitely written for women to follow and understand. I have not read the whole thing yet, but I really like what I am learning so far, its not as hard as I thought it would be.

I had originally gotten the book Football for Dummies to prepare for my grandsons’ first season playing Pop Warner football. I found that I was too dumb for Football for Dummies. Nowhere was there an explanation as to whether a team’s goal line was the goal they were defending or the one they were heading for. Everything else in the book depends on an understanding of this one principle. Nor could I find an explanation for a safety that made sense to me. Then I saw Snot Bubbles on Amazon. com and thought it was worth a try! Thank G-d for Snot Bubbles! A book that even a grandmother can understand. It gave me a good basic education in football and allowed me to graduate up to Dummies. (I learned things that even my daughter didn’t know.) Now I even watch NFL games on TV and can have a fairly educated conversation with my grandsons.

I enjoyed this little primer. It does exactly what it says. For a complete novice, it gives you just enough information to give you a basic concept of the game. My husband and stepson are avid football fans, and yes, I have often felt like the football widow, but no longer. As I learn more I’m finding the game interesting and complex. I’m ready for Football 201 now.

Thought this book was going to be more about football, and not what Holly Robinson Peete’s life around football was about. Ladies interested in the sport would have been better served to choose a different book.

Being a girl and a recent convert to actually attempting to UNDERSTAND one of America’s favorite past times, I wanted a book that wouldn’t boggle my brain, make my eyes go cross-eyed or leaving me scratching my head and feeling like, well, an idiot and the only person who can’t understand the game of football.

Chapter 1-5 outlines the offense and defensive teams and some technical elements–such as the regulations of the field, uniforms, scoring, reffing etc–as well as the more popular play schemes, tactics and terminology. Chapters 6-9 is focuses more on history, development and evolution of American football and odd-ball elements, like Holly’s personal cheat-sheets in understanding the game and how to watch it as well as interviews with some football wives (Deanna Favre, Brenda Warner, Sherice Brown to less tangible aspects of football and its players, the formation of the NFL and its breakdown into Conferences, and the general statistics of the game. Interspersed throughout are 10 best this or that and more condensed historical factoids that gets you familiar with the big names and turning points that were informative without boring you.

What I like about Holly’s is her way of talking about the game like you’re her friend, sitting down with a cup of coffee and just talking. It’s cozy, intimate, a little campy but simplistic but grounds out a basic sketch of the game and she even admits that she’s still learning. She tries to talk to you about the game, not at you so it’s not loaded with overblown jargon and she adds her own personal touches with stories from her childhood and her learning curve when she dated and married former Eagles QB Rodney Peete.

Don’t get twisted over the title of the book–as though women aren’t capable of understanding the game–it’s just a cute blurb to catch your eye. Holly’s the first one to point out the number of women who are huge fans and even MORE knowledgeable about football than the average male. Woman or man, I took it as a general primer for anybody who just needs a place to start. I enjoyed her approachable approach to explaining the game at its most basic level but since I came into knowing some things, I found myself wishing for more details about each position (not just a brief sentence, if that) and play schemes as well as some references that I could go to if I wanted more information. For the most part, if I knew absolutely nothing and didn’t wanted to be overwhelmed, beat over the head or intimidated even more about the game–this book accomplishes that easily–which is the whole point and purpose of THIS book. So for those of you who are familiar with football or have that basic foundation in your head, this book will not impress you. After this primer, I would suggest the Complete Idiot’s Guide to Football, a perfect next step, which gives you a lot more technical information and details you may find lacking in Holly’s book.

As a true b-ball fan, I never really appreciated the great american sport of football. I became more and more intrigued by the sport as I followed our Carolina Panthers to the Superbowl, season before last. Although I religiously watched all of the playoff games, I certainly couldn’t hold my own in a conversation about the games. But now I have to say I believe I can. Holly, girl, you did the dog gone thing. Men even seemed to be the impressed by the mere fact that I was reading a book about football (as I found at the airport earlier this week).
This book is fun, sassy and informative. I can hardly wait until this season’s opener. Bring on the beer, wings and yes, even ice cream. I’m lovin’ it!

After reading many of the reviews on Amazon, I decided to purchase this book thinking that it was the best choice for an intro to football for women, or rather, for people who don’t know much about football. Generally, when something is written about sports and “for women”, I tend to think that what the writer really means is that they start at the beginning with no assumptions about things you already know (or should know) about the sport because women are generally thought to be less knowledgeable about sports than men are.

The book has loads of knowledge about the history of football, the rules, and plenty of top 10 lists to acquaint you with players, coaches and games. There’s plenty of terminology and strategy included as well. However, there’s also an entire chapter devoted to football wives talking about their husbands schedules (and so on) as well as comments about how “cute” football huddles are and gushing over the ties to Holly’s love of ice cream and the game.

Over all, I would say that the amount of knowledge in the book is good for a beginner’s guide. But, I would also say that if you are A)someone who likes to cut to the chase or B) not a “girly girl” who wants to hear about Holly Peete’s childhood, family life, and lists of things that she finds cute when you are buying a book to learn about football… go with another book.

If, on the other hand, you do find that heart warming anecdotes and and off topic discussions of a football player’s family life do help you to stay interested in what you are reading, then by all means buy this book. That’s just not what I am looking for in a book about sports.

Books like this one make me understand why women may not be as interested in sports as men are. Books like this one assume that women can’t be interested in a sport the same way that a man is… that she has to be convinced that sports are worth while. I’m just waiting for a beginner’s guide to a sport that isn’t cute and cuddly to “appeal to women” and, alternatively, isn’t titled “the idiot’s guide to …”. What I want is a book that respects me as a person who is truly interested in the sport *for what the sport is* but is also aware that some people just never learned about a particular sport and don’t have any knowledge base that can be assumed.

Holly Peete’s book is definitely informative, but also has a lot of superfluous information that has nothing to do with football for anyone other than herself. I give it three starts for having to sift through all of that off topic info.

You’d think every guy in America (if not the whole planet) knew the details of football. Well, some — albeit not many — do not. It was late in life that my interest in football (NFL & collegiate) really sparked, and I wanted to know much more about the strategy and workings of the game. First I got the Idiot’s Guide, and it was fine. Then I got the Dummies book, and it helped as well. But I was still confused on the very basics, which is “who is what player and how do they fit into the game?”
So, when I stumbled across Snot Bubbles, it looked to be worth a try. Good choice! It does cover the very basics, and does so very well!!!
So, to anyone else that really wants to know the absolute basics, this is a book to read.
The others — Idiot’s and Dummies — are also fine, although they are more detailed. The Idiot’s does an especially good job of explaining things worth knowing, like what is a Color Analyst, or a Hail Mary, and what do you mean by Snot Bubbles????

I’ve always wanted to understand football. My husband loves it and I always give him a hard time when he wants to watch it, which is completely unfair of me since he allows me my TV time when I need it (American Idol, anyone?). I decided that I’d like to learn about football. You have to know and understand the basics if you want to truly enjoy any game, so I did some research and found this book. I really enjoyed it. Holly made learning about the game so easy. I must admit, I had to re-read the chapter about the actual plays, but it’s very involved so I’m sure that’s understandable. I wasn’t completely thrilled with Holly’s personality, which couldn’t help but shine through on the pages. One example is when she was talking about a time when her husband was seriously injured on the field. All she could talk about was how she didn’t have any makeup on in the hospital. Personality aside, Holly wrote a very good book aimed at people like me, who literally need to start from the very beginning. I can now watch a game and know what’s going on.

My knowledge of football is limited but I’ve always enjoyed the game. Holly Robinson Peete writes with humor as well as honing in on the “fears” of women who don’t understand the game. I learned a lot and refer to it as I watch this year’s onslaught of games. She also provides interesting anecdotal comments and facts about the history of the game and its famous and infamous
players.
